Along with so many others in our community and beyond, San Joaquin Community Hospital (SJCH) is saddened to have lost a beloved member of our hospital family, Wendy Wayne, who died of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma on Sunday, June 17, 2012.

For the last two years, Wendy has been the project coordinator for The Cancer Center at SJCH. She enthusiastically took on the task because of her strong belief that Kern County residents should have access to world-class cancer care in their own backyard.

During her service to SJCH, Wendy visited more than 15 major cancer centers throughout the U.S. to observe the true meaning of patient-centered cancer treatment.

Wendy also helped create the Patient and Family Advisory Council for The Cancer Center at SJCH, a group of about 15 members – current or former cancer patients, relatives or friends of patients – who meet on a monthly basis. The intention of the council is to ensure that the vision of SJCH’s new cancer center will focus on treating the whole person and reflect the Sacred Work already in practice at SJCH on a daily basis, something Wendy actively participated in as well.

“Wendy had a deep, personal sense of Sacred Work. She believed so much in the mission of SJCH and the idea that each one of us can make a difference in the lives around us, no matter what our role or position in the hospital,” said Robert Beehler, SJCH’s president and CEO. “It was a blessing to work with her and to be among her wide circle of friends – she will be missed greatly by this entire community and certainly by her SJCH family, who cared about her very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with Wendy’s family.”
