Childbirth Education (Four-week course)

SJCH’s comprehensive childbirth program is a great way to prepare for labor and birth. Held in a comfortable and relaxed environment, classes are available either as a series of four classes on weekday evenings, or two classes on weekends. Topics include pregnancy, stages of labor, birth – both natural and cesarean – comfort techniques, pain management, understanding newborns, postpartum care and breastfeeding. Childbirth educators will also teach body position techniques, so please bring a pillow and blanket.

A tour of our beautiful Maternity Care Center concludes the series. You must pre-register for this course by calling 661-869-6434. (Note: Plan on enrolling in this class during the fifth month of pregnancy; starting the class in the seventh month.)

Breastfeeding Basic Training

When: The third Wednesday of each month from 5 to 8 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Call 661-869-6434.

Location: Sierra-Tejon Room, SJCH basement (Note: Plan on enrolling in this class during the sixth month of pregnancy; starting the class during the seventh or eighth month.)

Your baby’s health begins with good nutrition. Studies show that breastfeeding improves health benefits for both mother and child. In our class, you’ll learn why it is important to breastfeed. We’ll also show you how to best hold your baby while nursing and suggest ways you can prevent common breastfeeding discomforts and challenges.

Also, if you are returning to work or school following the birth of your baby, you will learn how to pump and properly store your breastmilk for those times that you cannot be with your baby. This is a free, three-hour class that will also cover the anatomy and physiology of lactation, infant positioning and problem solving.

Mommy & Me

San Joaquin Community Hospital’s free support group for new moms with babies from birth to one year old. Held on the first and third Tuesday of the month, the group provides an opportunity to meet other moms, share experiences and build friendships. Pre-registration is not required. Because meeting days are subject to change, please call 661-869-6434 for more details.

Maternity Care Center Tours

Location: Meet in the Maternity Care Center waiting room, third floor of the SJCH North Tower

We invite you to take a tour of our award-winning Maternity Care Center, where your own “Baby Love” story will begin. One of our center’s employees will take you on a personal tour of the maternity unit, including a labor and delivery room (subject to room availability) and postpartum room. Basic hospital policies, including newborn security, will be discussed.

You will also have the opportunity to pre-register for your delivery and any of the aforementioned classes.
